The essential E46 M3 facts

BMW M records the third-generation M3 as a 2000–2006 model, powered by the 3.2-litre S54 straight-six. The regular range included coupé and convertible body styles.

Buyers could choose a six-speed manual or six-speed SMG automated manual transmission. An advert should name the actual gearbox rather than describing both simply as automatic or manual.

02

Model year matters

BMW applied a restrained model update in 2003, with LED rear lights among the visible changes. Registration year alone does not prove the exact production specification, so compare the build date and supporting records.

Special editions and market-specific packages need their own evidence. Names, standard equipment and option availability can differ between countries.

Specification details worth recording

  • Coupé or convertible body style.
  • Six-speed manual or six-speed SMG transmission.
  • Exterior colour, interior colour and trim finish.
  • Factory audio, navigation, seat and comfort equipment supported by build information.
  • Any later wheels, suspension, exhaust, brake, infotainment or interior changes.
04

Questions to ask the seller

  • Can you provide the production date and evidence for the declared factory options?
  • Which parts differ from the car’s original build?
  • Are the original components included with the sale?
  • Do the MOT mileage record, service invoices and current odometer follow a consistent story?
  • Have any outstanding safety recalls been checked?

Search the car, then verify the example

Use generation and gearbox filters to narrow the market, then assess the individual car’s history and condition. Spec Finder’s option list is a comparison tool, not a substitute for original documents or an inspection.
